POSITION INFORMATION:
Under general supervision of the Fleet Manager the Equipment Mechanic performs a variety of skilled duties involved in performing repairs and maintaining automobiles, trucks, tractors, motor sweepers, mowers and other heavy and light equipment. This position inspects, diagnoses, overhauls, repairs, and adjusts hydraulics, engines, transmissions, and related vehicle systems and components. The Equipment Mechanic services and performs preventive maintenance duties on a variety of vehicles and equipment; and maintains a variety of records including City vehicle repair and inventory documents. Candidates with refuse experience is a plus. Possession of a Class A license is required by end of probation. This candidate must be coachable and possess a positive attitude, willingness to learn, ability to communicate with public/staff, and fit into a team environment, which is key to the Division’s success.

Education/Training:
- Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade.

The impact you will have: Under limited supervision, the Equipment Mechanic performs journeyman-level work in the repair and maintenance of San José Unified vehicles and equipment. Performing accurate record-keeping and reporting. Keeping the fleet of SJUSD vehicles and equipment running to support students and staff. A more detailed job description is available here.
Who you are: A reliable professional who is detail-oriented has excellent time management skills, and is an effective communicator. You work well independently and within a team and have a commitment to customer service and safety. You have a desire to continuously improve and grow within our team.
What you need for this position:
- Completion of 12th grade or equivalent
- 5 years of experience as a journeyman mechanic preferred
- Experience with repair and maintenance of school buses and garden equipment preferred
- Experience with Cummins and Ford engines and systems preferred
- A clean driving record
- California Class B California Driver's License with passenger and air brake endorsements
- Commercial Medical Certificate
- CCDET, Air Break Inspector, ASE Automotive, ASE Medium/Heavy Truck, Ase School Bus, BIT Inspection, and Forklift certifications preferred
- Air Conditioning Recovery and Recycle License preferred
